Today July 18th 2017, sees the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death. The Times has printed her obituary:

To commemorate this anniversary we are holding a ‘Tea With Mr D’arcy day’ at Nottingham Mechanics this Saturday (22nd).

We thought you’d like to know a little bit more about the sorts of courses we offer in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

In autumn 2017 we’ll be offering courses in:

Creative writing, Practical art with life drawing, literature, history, music appreciation, art appreciation, poetry, psychology, philosophy, beginners French, improvers Spanish, archaeology, Silk painting, astronomy, Latin, Lines on the map, advanced Russian, Church history, Chinese Brush painting, watercolour painting, Theatre appreciation –  with visits to local productions, IT courses at a variety of levels,

bag making, mosaics, jewellery making, dress making, cake decoration and much more are all courses in our Nottingham  community provision

We will be posting more details about our courses here over the summer.

‘Early Christianity, anti-Semitism and Hitler’s favourite theologian.’

This talk examines the rise of the anti-Semitism within the early Christian Church leading to key explosions of anti-Jewish violence and prejudice which Hitler was able to exploit for his own racist ends.

Middle Street Resource Centre Beeston has fast become a popular venue with WEA Beeston students and tutors.

We’re delighted to hear that the centre has won the Enabling The Community Award at the Best Of Broxtowe Awards 2017

Middle Street Resource Centre is situated at 74 Middle Street, Beeston – just be the tram and bus stop. It is a thriving community hub and café that offers a range of activities and support for those with mental health issues and other vulnerable groups. There are all sorts of activities on offer at the centre: art, painting, textiles, poetry, stained glass, crafts, wood work and gardening and of course some of our WEA Beeston courses.

The new Nottingham and Nottinghamshire autumn course brochure will be with us later this week.

  • A copy will be sent out (2nd Class post) to all  students who have attended a branch  course in Nottinghamshire during the last academic year  – exceptions to this is anyone who has in the past requested ‘no  publicity’ on their WEA enrolment form.

To commemorate the 200th Anniversary of Jane Austen’s death we are hosting a

TEA With Mr DARCY day at Nottingham Mechanics on Saturday 22nd July

 

Tutor Judith Hedley will present a day workshop which centres on Jane Austen’s most famous creation –   Fitzwilliam Darcy

Session 1: 10.am – 12noon

Session 2: 12.30pm-3.30pm

Cream tea & strawberries and cream will be served from 2.30pm and this will be followed by a discussion around ‘the feast that never happened’.

Cost: £10

Plus £4 for the cream tea and strawberries and cream
